University City partners receive $5 million grant from Lenfest Foundation to accelerate career opportunities for local residents
University City District (UCD), the University City Science Center and Drexel University have been awarded a $5 million grant from the Lenfest Foundation. The three-year grant will support a unique partnership that leverages University City’s explosive economic growth to train and place unemployed West Philadelphia residents in family-sustaining jobs today, while equipping the community’s workforce with the skills and certifications needed to connect to the jobs of the future.
Contribution from AT&T Supports Science Center Program for High School Students
Representatives from AT&T presented the University City Science Center with $20,000 at the Project Inquiry Student Showcase on February 7, 2018 at the Science Center. The contribution from AT&T funded the latest cohort of FirstHand’s Project Inquiry program, which gives high school students an in-depth and focused experience with STEM subjects.
Collaborative Research [RE]Imagining Art at New Esther Klein Gallery Exhibit
Six teams of researchers based at Indiana University Bloomington have reimagined science, and the results are on display in a new exhibit at the Esther Klein Gallery (EKG). [RE]Imagining Science opens on February 8, 2018 and runs through March 24, 2018. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 8th from 5:00 to 7:30 at the gallery, 3600 Market Street, Philadelphia.
Mentor, Adviser and Serial Entrepreneur, is the Newest Entrepreneur in Quorum
Karina Sotnik, a serial entrepreneur, mentor, adviser and educator with over a decade of experience growing international companies in Silicon Valley, is the latest Entrepreneur in Quorum. In her current role as the Director, Business Incubation and Accelerator Programs at the University City Science Center, Karina is developing and operating a suite of programs targeting companies looking to expand internationally. As Entrepreneur in Quorum, Karina will offer targeted advice for entrepreneurs looking to start and grow their businesses. From February through June, Karina will hold Office Horus in Quorum where entrepreneurs can meet with her one-on-one for 30-minute sessions.
Eagles vs. Patriots: A formal challenge for our friends in Boston
The University City Science Center, Wexford Science + Technology and uCity Square (“Philadelphia”) formally challenge CIC, BioLabs and the Venture Café Foundation (“Boston”) to a friendly Super Bowl wager. While not legally binding, if Philadelphia and Boston do not meet the terms of the wager within five days of the Super Bowl, the losing city will be subject to constant and unrelenting ridicule from the winning city.
Science Center’s QED Program Awards $600,000 to Advance the Commercialization of Three University Technologies
Researchers improving the efficiency of bone graft procedures, developing drugs to address treatment-resistant cancer, and advancing research to reverse the invasive potential of cancerous cells will receive a total of $600,000 from the University City Science Center’s QED Proof-of-Concept Program. The program, started in 2009 and now in its tenth round of funding, supports novel university technologies with market potential, bridging the gap between academic research and product commercialization. The awardees were selected from a pool of 54 applicants from 12 academic and research institutions in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
Art Inspired by Networks On Display at Esther Klein Gallery: Workshop, Lecture and Opening Reception Planned
The Esther Klein Gallery’s (EKG) newest exhibit features work from a group of young artists participating in the PENN Network Visualization Program. Networks Within and Around Us runs through January 26, 2018. A lecture by Dr. Danielle Basset will be held on Friday, January 19th at Quorum, 3711 Market Street Suite 800, at 5 p.m., followed by a reception with the artists from 6 – 8 p.m. at EKG, 3600 Market Street.
STEM-UP Network & University City Science Center team up to explore the Power of Networks for Female Entrepreneurs
When it comes to business, it’s not solely what you know. It’s also who you know. The STEM-UP Network has teamed with the University Science Center to present a Smart Talk panel discussion focused on women entrepreneurs. How Female Entrepreneurs Achieve Success Through Strong Networks will take place from Friday, December 8, 2017, from 9-10:30 a.m. at Quorum at the University City Science Center.
